What a great bit of kit. First up, let me say that this machine is not used as a server! Instead, I have used it for home storage of music, films, home made movies etc. So the machine was purchased as a home storage (which you get with the server version of the mac mini 2x 500GB 7200rpm hard drives come as standard). With the additional attraction of having a great processor (Intel quad core i7). The non-server versions of the mac mini come with hard drives with 5,200 rpm so a great upgrade for my needs. To boot, the machine has all the usual benefits of Macs, in that they are clatter and virus free and “just works”. I have a 6 year old mac mini 1st generation and still works as well as it did when I bought it because 3rd party software is heavily policed by Apple so that it doesn’t introduce malware (or any other little bugs that ultimately slow PCs down). The only downside with mac mini server is that if you are a serious gamer, there’s no discrete GPU (although you can rig it externally if you are that bothered) AND during set-up, make sure you have a USB keyboard and mouse handy even if you eventually want to use a bluetooth keyboard and either (my preference) a magic trackpad or bluetooth mouse.
But be warned: some unscrupulous 3rd party traders on amazon are using the wrong RRP so you think you are getting a saving but check on apple.com/uk for the latest upto date RRP. And remember, if you qualify for educational discount, you can get 3 years waranty FREE by buying directly from Apple. Don’t be conned

15 year old PC user here. This is my first Mac. This is amazing. Sure, you can get a better spec PC but I like Apple’s hardware/software combo; they make both. I ordered this from the Apple store yesterday in person and they even set this up for me in store for no extra cost! So when I got home it just works. I really do think you get what you pay for. The operating system is fast and it comes with OSX Lion on course. It’s virtually silent. Even more quiet than my Windows laptops I’d say.
I’ve got this connected up to a 24″ widescreen, Apple keyboard/mouse and trackpad and it just works! I’d say make the switch to Mac as you will not regret it. I must admit, both OSX and Windows do have their pros and cons though, as nice as the Mac is.
I had to do software updates and things like that, I even had to configure my magic mouse to right click which I thought was a bit silly but ahh well, it had to be done. One thing, I decided on this instead of the iMac as I wasn’t keen on the all in one’s, and I wanted the Mac Mini for something to switch over to while I wait for the 2012 Macbook Pros with Ivy Bridge in them hopefully.
It’s true, once you go Mac, you never go back.
Cheers

This is a great product imho, not because of the brand, but as a home server its really ideal. Pricey yes, but you do get get you pay for.
I have tried other products, but they always compromise is some way to achieve the ‘greenness’ and economy desired. The mini’s consumption is said to be just 13W (I didn’t test though), which makes it extremely economical to run, and for me this is very important. It is also very small (I don’t have a lot of space for a bulky server) so fits perfectly in my server cabinet, and is very silent too.
Despite all the green features its actually a very powerful machine, its not a half-baked locked down OS with no flexibility, it runs everything I need seamlessly and there is no compromise in performance like similar products.
The wireless features are great too, an HDMI port is a very valuable addition, plenty of USB slots and of course thunderbolt. Just be wary to have a USB keyboard handy when you install for the first time, Lion server OS is still a bit buggy it seems… I couldn’t get it to detect the wireless apple keyboard I own, others on apple forums noted the same bug.
Very happy!
